Unit 3:  Earth as a Planet

Questions to be answered in this unit:

1.    How do the motions of the Earth and moon impact life on earth?

2.    What is the Earth made out of?

3.    What causes the seasons and the phases of the moon?

What should I understand by the end of this unit?

1.    The relative position and movements of the earth, moon, and sun account for lunar and solar eclipses, the observed moon phases, tides, and seasons.

        2.    Earth consists of an Atmosphere, a Hydrosphere, a Geosphere, and a Biosphere.

3.    The earth has 3 major zones: the core, the mantle and the crust.

4.  The cause of Earth's seasons is the total amount of light an area receives due to the angle of incidence (angle at which the sunlight hits earth) and the concentration of sunlight (insolation) both of which change because of the tilt of the earth.

What Causes the Seasons?

  • Online Seasons Applet: press play to see an animation of Earth's seasons... (*NOTE: The direction of the Earth's tilt does not change, the location of the Earth in relation to the sun does)
  • Seasons Applet: a different view of the seasons on earth resulting from earth's tilt.

Phases of the Moon:

What causes the tides?  How is the moon related to tidal action?

What is and why do we have Daylight Savings Time?

What is precession?  How is Earth like a rotating toy top?  How long until the North Star is no longer the North Star?

I think that it's important to respect the religious beliefs of others even if you disagree or if their beliefs seem to fly in the face of scientific fact. Mama Coyle always told me that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Düsseldorf, two things: you spelled your name incorrectly and second, I thought I did you in after Halloween!

Those are fightin' words Dumbledork. Bring it on! Remember that time back in college when we were roommates, I pulled out some UFC moves and made you say Uncle? Ya, that's right, you cried like a little baby. Boo hoo!

What ever you say mr. Boyle, that was then, this is now, your still living in the past, you should grow up some time you know. And now i could own you in UFC, ive been practicing, and ya when you made me say uncle, i was calling for my uncle, Quinton Jackson, the current UFC champion, by the way. and now he with me and we're about to come to your house for a fun beating. see you there Boyle
